Why Make these Milk-Boosting Brownies?

Lactation brownies are simply regular brownies with a few milk-boosting add-ins—like oats, flaxseed, and brewer’s yeast. These ingredients, often called galactagogues, are thought to support breastmilk production.

When I first started making them, it was actually as a gift for a friend who had just had her baby. But soon enough, I began baking them for myself.

During my pumping days, I noticed about a 1–2 ounce increase in daily output when I ate them consistently. That may not sound like much, but every ounce adds up when you’re feeding your baby (or filling the freezer stash).

I was also maximizing each pump session with these amazing tips and fixed my slacker boob! I even noticed a difference when collecting let-downs with my silicone breast pump! Every precious drop counts when you’re a breastfeeding or pumping mom!

Over time, I was not only able to keep up with Remy and then Lily’s feedings, but I also donated thousands of ounces of milk to other families. These brownies became a small, comforting part of that journey—an easy way to treat myself while supporting supply.

What You’ll Need

The beauty of this recipe is that it starts with a boxed brownie mix—then you just add a few simple ingredients that may help boost milk supply:

  • Brownie mix – any brand you like
  • Brewer’s yeast – often used for supporting supply
  • Ground flaxseed – adds healthy fats and fiber
  • Rolled oats – a classic galactagogue
  • Eggs, oil, and water – whatever your mix calls for

Wanna make these lactation brownies without brewer’s yeast? Double up on oats and flaxseed and your brownies will still be tasty. Quick oats also work in place of rolled oats if that’s what you’ve got in the pantry.

What are Galactogogues?

Galactagogues are foods, herbs, or substances that may increase milk production. Here’s a quick look at the ones in these brownies:

Oats – may help with supply by supporting iron levels and overall nutrition

Brewer’s yeast – rich in protein, B vitamins, and minerals

Flaxseed – contains phytoestrogens and fatty acids that support healthy milk production

Coconut milk (optional swap for water or dairy milk) – helps with hydration, which is key since breastmilk is mostly water

These ingredients aren’t a guarantee, but many moms (myself included) notice a difference when they’re part of a routine.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Lactation Brownies

  1. Preheat the oven according to the directions on your brownie mix box.
  2. Mix the brownies as directed, adding the eggs, oil, and water.
  3. Stir in the add-ins: 2–3 tablespoons brewer’s yeast, 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed, and ½ cup rolled oats.
  4. Fold gently until everything is combined. Don’t overmix—the brownies will stay fudgier this way.
  5. Pour into a greased pan (usually 8×8 or 9×13, depending on your mix).
  6. Bake for the time listed on your box, but start checking a few minutes early since the extra ingredients can change the texture.
  7. Cool completely before cutting into squares.

💡 Time-saving tip: I often bake these in a muffin tin instead of a pan. It makes perfect single-serve portions, easy to grab with one hand while nursing or pumping.

Variations to the Recipe

Here are some variations you can consider to add a twist to the original lactation brownie recipe:

  1. Sea Salt Sprinkle: After baking the lactation brownies, add a sprinkle of coarse sea salt on top. The combination of sweet and salty flavors can create a delightful contrast and enhance the overall taste of the brownies.
  2. Oat Milk Substitute: Instead of using regular milk in the recipe, you can substitute it with oat milk. Oat milk is a plant-based alternative that adds a creamy texture and a slightly nutty flavor to the brownies. It also aligns well with the lactation theme since oats are known for their milk-boosting properties.
  3. Chocolate Chip Variation: Add a handful of chocolate chips to the brownie batter before baking. The melty chocolate bits will add extra richness and bursts of sweetness to each bite, making the lactation brownies even more indulgent. Consider using dark chocolate chips or make it double chocolate!
  4. Nutty Crunch: Incorporate chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans into the brownie batter. The nuts will provide a delightful crunch and an added dose of healthy fats and protein to the lactation brownies.
  5. Flavor Infusions: Experiment with different flavor infusions by adding ingredients like espresso powder, orange zest, cinnamon, or even a hint of chili powder. These additions can elevate the taste profile of the brownies and give them a unique and interesting twist.
  6. Swirls of Nut Butter: Before baking, dollop spoonfuls of your favorite nut butter (such as almond butter or peanut butter) onto the brownie batter. Use a knife or toothpick to gently swirl the nut butter into the batter, creating beautiful marbled patterns. This addition will introduce a creamy and nutty element to the lactation brownies.
  7. Coconut Shredding: Sprinkle a handful of shredded coconut on top of the brownie batter before baking. The coconut flakes will toast and turn golden brown, adding both flavor and texture to the lactation brownies.
  8. Maple syrup: Drizzle some maple syrup on top for a sweet new mom dessert!

Remember, these variations are meant to be fun and customizable. Feel free to mix and match ideas or even come up with your own creative twists to make lactation brownies that suit your taste preferences. Enjoy the process of experimenting and savoring these delightful treats!

When and How to Eat Lactation Brownies

There’s no strict rule for how many lactation brownies you should eat. Most moms stick to one or two pieces a day, but listen to your body and your supply.

When I baked these in muffin tins, I ate one lactation brownie muffin per day. It felt like the perfect breastfeeding snack—easy to grab, satisfying, and just enough to feel like a treat. Over time, I noticed that keeping them as part of my daily routine gave my supply a helpful little nudge.

It’s worth remembering that these brownies aren’t a magic fix. They work best alongside frequent nursing or pumping, staying hydrated, and resting whenever possible (easier said than done, I know). Think of them as a tasty boost that complements the other things you’re already doing to support your milk supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Remember, if you have any concerns about your milk supply or dietary choices while breastfeeding, it’s always best to consult with a lactation consultant or healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance and support.

Tips for Busy Moms

Making brownies while juggling a newborn can feel like a juggling act, so here are a few shortcuts that helped me:

  • Double the batch – I used to bake two mixes at once so I only had to wash bowls and pans once. It saved me time and dishes.
  • Freeze in single servings – Cut brownies (or muffins) into individual portions and freeze. That way, you can grab one whenever you need a snack without defrosting a whole pan.
  • Use an airtight container – If you’re keeping them on the counter, they’ll stay fresh for about 4 days (if they last that long!)
  • Give this recipe to your partner – This is such an easy lactation recipe from a box mix that even non-bakers can make it! Share this recipe with your village and ask them to take turns making a batch for you!
